Mobility scooters are an excellent means of retaining your independence by providing you with the ability of getting out and about without any assistance. They can provide you with the freedom of being able to go to the shops, visit family and friends or just to take a trip out.

They are very easy to use, economical to run and easy to maintain. Remember to take into account:

• Location – Where you will use your scooter
• Usage – How often and how far you will travel
• Size & Weight – What size you require and also the weight limit
• Car trips – Will you want to take it in the car for trips
• Storage space – What space do you have in which to store it

Types of Mobility scooters

Folding mobility scooter

These are lightweight, easily manoeuvrable and suitable for short trips. They can be easily folded to put into a car boot. These have a top speed of 4mph and an option of a three or four wheel version.

3 wheel mobility scooter

The three wheel version is more easily manouverable especially going around shops where space is more restricted and you need to make tight turns. They also provide a little more leg room which can be helpful if you have stiffness in your legs or you are a little taller.

4 wheel mobility scooter

The four wheel version is more durable and stable than a three wheel, and can handle slighter rougher terrain. If balance is an issue this version would be more beneficial.

Standard 4 and 6 mph scooters

If you are going to be spending more time on your mobility scooter, travelling greater distances and also navigating kerbs and hills you may need to look at a larger, sturdier model with possibly a faster speed i.e. 6mph. These are still for pavement use only and they also often have a higher weight limit and more features.

Maintenance and care

Mobility scooters require little maintenance. Ideally the battery needs to be charged daily whether in use or not. Keep the scooter clean and store in a dry place away from rain. Check the tyre pressures (refer to the user manual) and do not overload your scooter with excess weight.
