The Covidien Chromic Gut Sutures are absorbable sterile surgical sutures indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in ophthalmic surgery, but not in cardiovascular or neurological surgery. Mild chromic sutures are specially processed for ophthalmic and cuticular application.
Chromic Gut Sutures are prepared from purified connective tissue taken from bovine or ovine intestines. It is processed to provide greater resistance to absorption. The reverse cutting needle is strong and sharp, and will not easily break during use. It provides proper traction and suture placement. It is treated with chromic salt solution.
Chromic Gut Sutures cause a small amount of acute inflammatory reaction in tissues, which is expected as a general foreign body response to a substance. This reaction is followed by a slow loss of tensile strength and suture mass, as the enzymatic process dissolves the surgical gut until it is completely absorbed. Suture size is 6-0, with an 18-inch thread length, needle type of C-1, 12 mm and 3/8 Circle. Available in 12 per box.
