Chromic Gut Sutures are absorbable sterile surgical sutures prepared from purified connective tissue (mostly collagen) taken from the serosal layer of beef (bovine) intestines. The sutures are available in a variety of sizes.
The suture features a Tri-coined Reverse Cutting edge needle. The needle has properties that are best used for ophthalmic procedures and traction suture placement. It assists in better approximation of tough tissue. The needle has a NuCoat Technology coating that gives it better initial and multi-pass penetration resulting in less chance for tissue damage.
Chromic Gut sutures are recommended for use in general soft tissue approximation and or ligation, including use in ophthalmic surgery. It is not recommended to be used in cardiovascular and neurological surgery.
Chromic Gut Sutures cause a small amount of acute inflammatory reaction in tissues that are expected to have this type of foreign body response to a substance. This reaction is followed by a slow loss of tensile strength and suture mass, as the enzymatic process dissolves the surgical gut until it is completely absorbed. Thread size is 6-0, 18"thread length, with HE-6, 3/8 Circle needle.
