Formulated by Dowell et al. of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the BD BBL CDC Anaerobe Culture Media w/ 5% Sheep Blood Agar is a nonselective, highly nutritious medium used to isolate and cultivate a wide variety of fastidious and slow-growing, obligately anaerobic microorganisms. With high amounts of peptones, yeast extract, hemin, vitamin K1, and sheep blood, this medium has been seen to improve the growth of Prevotella melaninogenica, Fusobacterium necrophorum, Clostridium haemolyticum, as well as certain strains of Actinomyces israelii and Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron. It is sold in 100 plates per pack, with an interlocking and stackable design to prevent sliding or sample disruption.
