Standard wheelchairs provide mobility and comfort for long term users at an affordable price.  A user with good upper body strength can propel the wheelchair independently using hand rims attached to the rear wheels.  The two smaller front wheels, or casters, turn and spin to maneuver the chair.  Push handles allow a caregiver to push the wheelchair when necessary. Standard wheelchairs offer a range of seat widths and depths to ensure optimal fit for good postural support and pressure relief for the long term user.  They are equipped with adjustable foot rests and back rests for maximum comfort.  Arm rests can be full length for increased support, or desk length to allow the user to fit at a desk or table.

There are two types of standard wheelchairs to consider: a folding frame wheelchair and a rigid frame wheelchair. A folding frame wheelchair is built with a cross brace x-frame which folds for easy transport and storage.  Its many moving joints allow a bit more flexibility when riding over uneven surfaces, but also suffer greater wear and tear and require more maintenance.  A rigid frame wheelchair, constructed with welded joints, provides better stability and is more durable.  It is easier to push because of its lighter weight and fewer moving parts.  The back of the chair folds down and the wheels have a quick release mechanism to allow for transportation in a car.
